White Sox Promote Edgar Quero from Triple-A as Youth Movement Gains Momentum

In a significant move, the Chicago White Sox have officially promoted Edgar Quero from Triple-A Charlotte, bringing the highly touted catching prospect closer to his big league debut. Along with Quero’s promotion, the Sox made a few other roster changes:

  • Omar Narváez has been designated for assignment, likely signaling a shift in the team’s long-term plans. With Narváez’s value around the league, there’s a chance he may clear waivers and either remain with the White Sox or report to Charlotte if he stays in the organization.

  • Andrew Benintendi has been activated from the injured list, but will sit out for today’s game as he transitions back into the lineup. Greg Jones has been optioned back to Charlotte to make room for Benintendi.

Today’s game will mark Edgar Quero’s debut behind the plate, batting seventh for the White Sox. His promotion is part of a larger trend the Sox are embracing: the growing importance of their younger, homegrown talent.

Quero’s call-up has been in the works for years. Originally signed as a 16-year-old free agent by the Los Angeles Angels, Quero was traded to the White Sox in July 2023 as part of a deal that saw Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo López head to the Angels. Since joining the Sox organization, he’s been on a steady rise, showing consistent development across the minor leagues. In 2024, Quero hit .280/.366/.463 with 16 home runs and 70 RBIs split between Double-A Birmingham and Triple-A Charlotte. This season, he has only improved, posting a .333 average and a .444 on-base percentage in 15 games at Triple-A.

Ranked as the White Sox’s No. 6 prospect and No. 81 overall in MLB Pipeline’s Top 100, Quero’s arrival comes at a critical moment for the team. The White Sox offense has struggled mightily, currently hitting just .200 with only 101 hits in 16 games — the second-worst mark in baseball and the worst in the American League. The addition of Quero, a switch-hitter with a balanced approach, should give the Sox offense a much-needed boost.

This call-up also signals a subtle shift in the White Sox’s approach under Chris Getz. While Getz may not yet be fully onboard with the modern trend of building a team from the farm system up rather than relying on aging veterans, the promotion of Quero highlights a growing recognition that the team’s future lies in its younger players. At just 22, Quero is among the emerging stars that the Sox need to build around moving forward.

Although the White Sox are still struggling for power, their first order of business is to improve their contact and consistency at the plate. With the lineup struggling to get on base, it’s clear that the hope is Quero’s arrival can help the team turn a corner, especially as they look to find more reliable hitting beyond the team’s power drought.

The youth wave is finally gaining momentum on the South Side, and Edgar Quero’s promotion is just the latest sign that the White Sox are looking ahead, even as they continue to navigate a difficult season.
