It may be oxidised using this enzyme and changed into gabapentinol or norgabapentinol. It was first authorised as Neurontin in 1993 and then again in 2005 as Gabapentin. It is used to alleviate nerve-related discomfort, such as shingles and diabetic neuropathy. Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, some forms of postherpetic neuralgia, and Bell's palsy are other conditions for which it is used to help control seizures in children who are at least two years old.
